MSOC had organized an online case sharing seminar, part of the bi-yearly academic event of the society. Part 2 of the 2021 seminar is in regards on the Salivary gland cytology. We were fortunate to have presenters from National University of SIngapore, which includes Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nga Min En that presented her view on the current reporting system of the salivary gland lesions. There were also 2 junior members of the NUS pathology department, Dr, Nicholas Tan and Dr. Giedion Tan, whom presented interesting cases of salivary gland tumours. We also have a local presenter, Dr, Nurdini from HKL that presents her collection of cases. A total of 98 participants joined this event.
On 12th October 2021, a post congress seminar on gynaecology cytology was held online via zoom. This seminar is jointly organized by Department of Pathology of both Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan, Kuantan and Hospital Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, Temerloh, Pahang with Malaysian Society of Cytology. This seminar is attended by more than 200 participants locally as well internationally. The invited speaker was Prof. Nga Min En and Dr. Lim Li Min from National University Hospital Singapore, along with local speakers; Dr. Mukarramah Che 'Ayub, Dr Farveen Merican Abu Backer and Dr. Nor Hayati Yunus. The seminar was ended with a quiz, organized by Prof. Nga and prizes were given to 3 best participant.
On 26th August 2021, a case sharing seminar was held via Zoom, with the theme of Breast Cytology. It was attended by more than 250 participants locally. 2 speakers for this seminar was Dr. Nor Hayati Yunus from Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II, Kota Bharu and Dr. Noorasmaliza Md. Paiman from Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Setar. The society's annual general meeting was also held in between the seminar, attended by more than 100 members. It was an election year and a new set of committee members were elected.
2021 Online Urine Cytology Workshop: The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytopathology was held on 25th March 2021 using online Zoom platform and Youtube Live streaming, hosted by Histocytopathology Unit, Department of Pathology, Hospital Tuanku Fauziah, Kangar, and Perlis in collaboration with MSOC. It was participated by 381 participants from both local and oversea, comprising of Specialists, Medical Officers, Scientific Officers and Medical Laboratory Technologists from both pathological and clinical fields.
The invited speakers are Dr Farveen Marican Bt Abu Backer from Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim, Sungai Petani, Kedah, Dr Noorasmaliza Md Paiman from Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Setar and Dr Norizal bin Mohd Noor from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Kampus Sungai Buloh.
THYROID CYTOLOGY SEMINAR (WEBINAR) 2020 was held on 26th August 2020 using online Zoom platform and Cytology Unit, Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Setar hosted the event. The seminar was jointly organized by MSOC and it was participated by 107 participants (including committees) from all over Malaysia, comprising of Specialists, Medical Officers, Scientific Officers and Medical Laboratory Technologists from pathological field.
It was initiated by a welcome speech by the President of MSOC Prof. Dato' Dr. Sharifah Noor Akmal Syed Hussain from Pantai Premier Pathology Lab in Kuala Lumpur. Among invited speakers are Prof Sharifah Noor Akmal herself, Dr Mukarramah Che Ayob and Dr Norhayati Yunus from Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II, Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Dr Wong Yin Ping from Hospital Canselor Tuanku Mukhriz, UKM Cheras, Dr Norizal bin Mohd Noor from Universiti of Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sungai Buloh and Dr Noorasmaliza Md Paiman from Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Setar.
The objectives of the seminar were to give latest updates on Thyroid cytopathology reporting, discussing the challenges in reporting of thyroid cytopathology and sharing interesting cases from different centres in Malaysia.
On 6th September 2019, MSOC with collaboration of International Academy of Pathology, Malaysian Division and Department of Pathology, Hospital Melaka and Hospital Muar, organized a pre-congress cytology seminar on EUS FNAC and Peritoneal Fluid Cytology. This seminar was held in Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Malacca. Among the speakers are Dr. Favid Chhieng from University of Washington Medical Center Seattle, Washingon, US, Dr, Ruben Raj Theyventhiran from Mahkota Medical Centre, Malacca and Mr. Muhamad Feerdaus Kamis from Pantai Premier Pathology, Kuala Lumpur. The seminar was attended by 120 participant both from local and oversea.
Gynae with HPV and Breast Cytology Symposium 2019 was held on 3rd to 4th August 2019 at the Auditorium, UniKL City Campus KL, the heart of Malaysia. This year MSOC symposium held in conjunction with our 7th AGM, was a successful collaboration between UniKL MESTECH and MSOC. This symposium aimed to provide the knowledge and overview of HPV DNA Cervical screening as well as shared experience from our invited speakers. The main speakers for this symposium was Dr David Papadimos from Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, Queensland, Australia; currently the partner incharge of the Cytology Department. He is also the chair of the RCPA National Cervical Screening Program Workforce Project Steering Committee. He has shared interesting and informative experience on the current strategy in cervical cancer prevention that has been on going in Australia. Among other invited speakers were Dr Zakiah Mohd Said, Dr Nor Hayati Yunus and Dr Wong Yin Ping. The response from the participants was so overwhelming with total participants of more than 100.
During the meeting, an gyne cytology quiz was held with money prizes as award. 3 top winners are Dr Siti Sarah bt Zainal Abidin (PPUM), Asmazila Baharoom (PPUKM) & Dr. Putra Aduka Bin Hamzah (Hosp. Sultanah Bahiyah).
On 13th April 2019 (Saturday), a Cytology Workshop was held in SEGi College
Penang, George Town, Penang. The workshop was jointly organised by Malaysian Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences (MIMLS) with SEGi College Penang and Malaysian Society of Cytology (MSOC) to enhance the professional development of cytology knowledge among medical laboratory professionals and cytotechnologists.
The workshop commenced with an opening address by the President of MIMLS, Ms Faridah Robiah Ismail. Two distinguished speakers, namely Dr Ch’ng Ewe Seng from Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (AMDI), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Dr Farveen Marican Abu Backer Maricar from Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim, Sungai Petani were invited to deliver lectures and case studies. The speakers disseminated their knowledge on Serous Fluid Cytology and Fine Needle Aspiration of Thyroid and Respiratory Cytology (Case Study and Digitised Slide Session).
The workshop saw a total of 40 participants from public and private hospitals, private laboratories, as well as teaching universities and colleges. The participants comprised of pathologists, medical officers, laboratory managers, medical laboratory scientists and technologists, lecturers and tutors.
Overall the event was good. Positive feedback received via our evaluation form that was completed by the participants online. There are plans to collaborate on various workshops and seminars in the future.
Northern Region FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) Symposium 2019 was held on 17th March 2019 at the Auditorium, Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Setar. The theme of the symposium is “ABC of FNAC”. The workshop was jointly organized by PGMES and MSOC and it was attended by 75 participants from all over Malaysia, comprising of specialists, medical officers and medical laboratory technologists from surgical, clinical, radiological and pathological field. It was initiated by a welcome speech by the Timbalan Pengarah Perubatan II Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Dr Balkhis binti Abdullah. Among invited speakers are Dr Farveen Marican binti Abu Backer Maricar from Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim, Sungai Petani, Kedah and Dr Norizal bin Mohd Noor from University of Technology MARA (UiTM) Sungai Buloh. The objectives of the training are to strengthen basic knowledge in handling and processing of FNAC specimens, encouraging the right technique of FNA sampling and updates on latest issue of breast and salivary gland cytology. The response from the participants was so overwhelming as we have to close the registration one month before the symposium.
On 26th October 2018, the IAPMD 5th Annual Scientific Meeting, Pre-congress Cytology Workshop was held at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resorts and Spa, Kota Kinabalu Sabah. The theme of the workshop was Non-gynaecology, with updates on Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytology and Paris System for Reporting Urine Cytology. The workshop was organized jointly by MSOC and Pathology Department, Hospital Queen Elizabeth. In addition to local speakers, two foreign speakers were also invited, namely Assoc. Professor Dr Nga Min En from National Unversity Health System, Singapore and Dr Qasem Ahmed from Fatima Memorial Hospital College of Medicine & Dentistry, Pakistan. Besides lectures and case studies about salivary gland and urine cytology, the participants were also updated on reporting thyroid cytopathology with the Bethesda System. About 145 participants participated in this event. comprising of specialists, medical officers, medical laboratory technologists and foreign delegates.
